Grinders and wire wheels only reach flat, open surfaces and can thin sound metal. Blasting gets into pits, seams, welds and corners evenly, so no rust is left behind to spread under new paint.
It also shows the true condition of the steel. Once rust is gone, you can see whether a trailer floor, chassis rail or tank wall needs repair before you pay for paint.
Keeping the rust from coming back
Bare steel starts to rust again quickly, especially near the coast. An inhibitor is used on wet jobs, and the steel should be primed within a day.
For long life, ask your painter or coater about a primer and topcoat system suited to where the item lives, such as a coastal property or a farm.
