Acid washing can burn brick, stain mortar and leave salts behind. High-pressure water can blow out mortar and cut the face of softer bricks, letting water in and speeding up weathering.
Soda cleans the surface without either problem, which is why it suits heritage brick, soft sandstone and older homes.
Inside and outside jobs
External walls, facades and garden walls are the most common jobs, but internal brick feature walls and fireplaces can also be cleaned. Rooms are masked and sealed off to contain dust.
